IDG indicates that desktop virtualization is the second largest item enterprises invest in. Enterprise Strategy Group found that 60% of enterprises either already have desktop virtualization projects or a solid strategy to implement this technology. Even Gartner, typically conservative with their prognoses, says that Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) "…[is] poised to undergo explosive growth."

As online crime has grown more prevalent, consumer confidence in IT security has plummeted. The underground economy is flourishing as cybercriminals develop new methods to infiltrate computer networks, especially the Internet, to steal a person's identity, sell contraband, stalk persons, or disrupt operations with malware. Certain websites run by cybercriminals in Eastern Europe now offer automated malware scanning as-a-service packages to ensure that the latest malware threats will continue to fly under the radar of pattern-based detection.

Security is a critical component in the growing ecosystem surrounding virtualization. Virtual security appliances (VSAs) play a vital role in fulfilling IT expectations today, and will continue to do so in the future -Hi an unusual situation for a relatively new technology. "This is easily understandable when you look at how these products play such an important role in things such as Green IT, datacenter consolidation, and improved security," said Jon Crotty, a research analyst with IDC's Security Products and Services Group in an interview with Trend Micro last month.

In December 2009, AV-Test.org, a worldwide operating provider for IT security testing and consultancy services, tested five market-leading enterprise endpoint solutions from Symantec, McAfee, Microsoft, Sophos, and Trend Micro. AV-Test.org tested zero-day attacks actually occurring in the wild by sourcing malicious URLs that had malware associated with them. Products were configured to block or detect the threats at multiple levels, thereby giving each vendor maximum ability to protect against these threats. The testing occurred simultaneously across all vendors’ platforms to ensure no biases during the test runs.
